Choose a small but representative job
Select a few trees that reflect the work you normally do, including the measurements, notes and photographs you expect to report. Use authorised or demonstration data. Write down the outputs you need and what would make the pilot successful. A short evaluation should exercise the workflow you intend to use, not just the screen you find easiest to demonstrate.
Follow the record from field entry to report
- Create a sample project and identify each tree consistently.
- Record the fields your brief requires, with units and location notes.
- Add photographs and captions to the correct tree.
- Check the mapped positions against the actual sample locations.
- Produce the report and schedule formats you intend to give clients.
- Open the exported files and review them as the recipient would.
Test the devices and account arrangement you will use
Canopy is available in the browser and on Android. If you plan to work across devices or within an organisation, test those arrangements with the authorised accounts and devices involved. Check that the expected project changes appear, that members have the intended access and that the report branding is correct. Native iOS release is separate from browser access on an iPhone; assess the browser workflow if that is your intended setup.
Record evidence, not just a pass mark
The downloadable CSV provides checks for tree identity, units, photos, map positions, report pins, PDF opening, schedule export, organisation access, cross-device changes and branding. Add the device and browser used, the result and any action needed. It is a review aid, not an automated test or a guarantee of suitability.
An example acceptance brief
Illustrative pilot: “Evaluate five demonstration tree records on the intended field device and office browser. Each tree must retain its ID, photographs and notes. Review the exported PDF and schedule, check map references, then record any issue that would prevent the normal client handover.”
