Match the photograph to a stable tree record
A useful photograph answers three questions: which tree is this, when was it taken, and what does it show? Record the project, tree ID and inspection date with the image. If several trees appear in the frame, identify the subject in a caption. Keep the original image alongside any annotated copy so the observation can be reviewed.
Use a sequence, not a single close-up
- A context image showing the tree and nearby features relevant to the brief.
- A whole-tree image where the view is available from a safe position.
- A closer view of the observed feature, with its location described.
- A measurement or reference only where it can be obtained safely and meaningfully.
A photograph cannot replace an assessment of features outside the view. Note obstructions, poor lighting and areas not inspected. Do not climb or approach unstable material to improve the photograph.
A caption that can be checked
Example: “Tree T014, 9 October 2026. View of the lower trunk from the eastern side. The marked area identifies the feature described in observation O3.” This connects the image to a record without claiming that the photograph alone establishes the cause or significance of the feature. A recommendation belongs with the assessment and reasoning, rather than being implied by an arrow.
Before exporting the report
- Open each tree record and confirm the photograph belongs to that tree.
- Check that annotations remain visible at the exported size.
- Match caption references to the report text and tree schedule.
- Review whether people, number plates or private property details need to be excluded from a client copy.
- Keep the source images and the issued report with a clear version name.
For repeat visits, record the viewpoint so a later photograph can be compared sensibly. Differences in season, light and camera angle can affect appearance; explain those limitations before drawing conclusions from a pair of images.
See the tree inspection and reporting workflow or use the tree inventory checklist to connect the images to a structured schedule.
